Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) are leading on the development of the strategic perinatal workforce plan to recruit, retain, train and transform the current and future perinatal workforce in NHS Wales. We celebrate International Day of the Midwife to recognise all the great work midwives do across Wales every day of the year.

Theme: Midwives: a vital climate solution
On Sunday 5th May midwives across the world will be celebrating International Day of the Midwife 2024. This year's' theme is at the core of COP28 and strategies to improve the health and status of women. Midwives, as care providers and defenders of women’s sexual and reproductive health are key players in designing resilient health systems capable of withstanding the worst impacts of climate change, delivering environmentally sustainable health services, and empowering women to make decisions that benefit themselves, their families and the planet. Climate change is the greatest health challenge of our time. Our warming planet has more heatwaves, more floods, and more natural disasters that significantly impact the health of women and babies. Putting resources and efforts into addressing the climate crisis is a matter of extreme urgency.
The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) recognises that midwives are a vital solution in adapting health systems to climate change, and lowering carbon emissions overall. Midwives deliver safe and environmentally sustainable health services and are first responders when climate disasters hit.
