Wales Deanery (School of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education)

The strategic aim of the Wales Deanery is to commission, quality assure and support the education and training of trainees, hospital doctors, GPs, dentists and DCPs in Wales.

This includes the development of innovative models of education and training delivery, building training capacity and leading on postgraduate medical and educational research.

WIMAT Accreditation

The Welsh Institute of Minimal Access Therapy (WIMAT), based at The Wales Deanery, Cardiff University provides a wide range of postgraduate education and training for junior doctors through to consultants including basic, intermediate and advanced courses in a range of medical and surgical specialties.

The Institute is an all-Wales facility, with courses being provided in conjunction with the postgraduate centres and clinical skills laboratories across the principality and throughout the rest of the UK.

Professor Derek Gallen, Postgraduate Dean, The Wales Deanery said: "We are delighted to have achieved this accreditation from the Royal College of Surgeons, and to be the first Surgical Education Centre in the UK to achieve this recognition, and for Wales to be leading the way, makes the achievement even more special.

"I am very pleased indeed for the Welsh Institute of Minimal Access Therapy team, as their dedication and commitment is second to none."

GMC 2012 National Trainee Survey

The GMC 2012 National Trainee Survey was launched on 30th April 2012 and will be open until 15th June 2012.  It takes the format of an online questionnaire which asks questions on areas such as workload, the level and quality of supervision and the way in which training is delivered. Completion of the survey is mandatory for all Foundation and Specialty trainees as specified in the Purple and Gold Guides respectively and trainees may be asked to provide proof of completion of the survey at their ARCP or for end of year sign off.

Purpose of the Trainee Survey

The trainee survey provides an opportunity for trainees to give the GMC their views on the quality of medical education and training within the Wales Deanery. The feedback provided in the survey is also a key evidence source for the Deanery to identify areas of good practice as well as those which may require further attention.

Results of the Trainee Survey

All responses to the survey will be treated in confidence and the results will be made available by the GMC from July 2012.  The Deanery will provide further information regarding the results as they become available.

Results from previous surveys can be accessed via the GMC's reporting tool website and summary reports can be accessed by clicking on the links below.
