Researching Broad Based Training: Update from Medical Education

BBT aims to develop practitioners adept at managing complex, patient-focussed care; specialty integration; and conviction in career choice.

In recent years, there have been significant developments in UK medical education and training, following recommendations made in a number of seminal reports which looked at the needs of both patients and the service generally. The Greenaway Review (2013) on the Shape of Training was commissioned to undertake an extensive consultation across the four home countries of the UK and sets out a proposed framework for delivering changes to training to make it fit for purpose in light of the acknowledged change in societal need.

Oriel Recruitment System

Oriel is of one the initiatives of the Medical and Dental Recruitment and Selection (MDRS) programme.  It includes the design and, now ongoing implementation, of a UK-wide recruitment system for postgraduate specialty medical, dental and public health training.  From December 2014 onwards, healthcare scientists will also be recruited through the system.  The Oriel team within Health Education England (HEE) continues to work with trainees, the devolved nations and wider stakeholders to produce a unified system and solution.
