Rheumatology

The Rheumatology group provides opportunities for multidisciplinary research in inflammatory arthritis, extending from molecular biology, through epidemiology, health informatics and service delivery, to subsequent clinical trials. The group has specific research expertise in spondyloarthropathies and ankylosing spondylitis.

Current research includes:

  • The use of routinely collected data, combined with data from patients and clinicians, to study the impact of Ankylosing Spondylitis and effects of its treatment. This work involves collaboration with the health informatics unit, health economists, epidemiologists, sports scientists and industry partners,
  • Clinical trials of novel biological agents for the treatment of inflammatory arthritis, in conjunction with the local trials units,
  • Optimising delivery of clinical RCTs using routine clinical data and networks,
  • Molecular characterisation of a novel therapeutic target in Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Evaluation of a national e-learning Rheumatology module for junior doctors.
