Dyffryn Clwyd GPST Scheme Information

Dyffryn Clwyd is a beautiful area of North Wales with plentiful opportunities to benefit from outdoor pursuits and spectacular countryside with the Clwydian Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty on your doorstep. It is also very central in North Wales offering easy access to the beauty and peace of Snowdonia, and the North Wales coast as well as easy links to the large cities of Chester, Liverpool and Manchester.

The Dyffryn Clwyd Scheme has been in existence in various guises since 1971 when it was originally founded as a joint project with the neighbouring Wrexham Scheme by Dr Gwyn Thomas. Since then it has grown in size and roughly covers an area extending from Holywell in the East, to Penrhyn Bay in the West , and extending down the Vale of Clwyd to Ruthin.

The scheme seeks to deliver a varied programme for GP Training with the opportunity to experience hospital posts based at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan, and General Practice posts located in rural and urban locations within the area.

A half day release course runs weekly during academic term time based in the Postgraduate Centre at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, which aims to provide a needs based curriculum for GP Trainees covering topics of particular relevance for GP Training and the MRCGP Examination.

The scheme also regularly provides teaching aimed at ensuring success in the MRCGP such as a Mock CSA, and regularly features courses for General Practice related topics such as Minor Surgery, Family Planning, Palliative Care , Communication Skills which are often shared with neighbouring GP Training Schemes.

The half day sessions feature regular presentations by the trainees, group work, as well as formal teaching from medical and non medical speakers, and regular team building events. We are a scheme of about 25 trainees based in a friendly District General Hospital which encourages the formation of a supportive peer group and the size of the scheme makes it feasible for all trainees from ST1 ST2 and ST3 to be welcomed to the half day release session.
