Orthodontics is the development, prevention, and correction of irregularities of the teeth, bite and jaw.

Once you have a minimum of 2 years post basic qualification and are fully registered with the GDC you can apply to train in the specialty of Orthodontics.

The courses take 3 years (or equivalent part-time) and consist of clinical training (in a hospital) alongside academic study (at the university). After 3 years you will sit the examination for the Membership in Orthodontics (MOrth) and, if successful, you will gain a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST). This will allow you to apply to the GDC to be included on the specialist list and be known as a Specialist in Orthodontics. Trainees are also required to study for a higher degree, such as the MSc, during their training. You will normally receive a salary during your training, although you will be required to pay tuition fees. This is a Dental Postgraduate deanery approved programme which is accompanied by a National Training Number (NTN) and leads towards a CCST.

Training is designed to equip the trainee with the skills necessary to practice as a Consultant in Orthodontics. These are defined in the curriculum prescribed by the GDC:

The British Orthodontic Society (BOS) Training Grade Group (TGG) has put together a useful document: A Guide to applying for a Specialist Registrar post in Orthodontics.
