Welsh Laproscopic Colorectal Training Scheme

The Welsh Laparoscopic Colorectal Training Scheme (WLCTS) was developed in 2008 in response to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines on the use of laparoscopic surgery. The guideline stated that:

Laparoscopic (including laparoscopic assisted) resection is recommended as an alternative to open resection for individuals with colorectal cancer in whom both laparoscopic and open surgery are considered suitable.

NICE 2000

It also stressed the importance of appropriately trained surgeons to undertake the procedures.

The WLCTS led by Clinical Lead Mr Jared Torkington, Consultant Surgeon, Llandough Hospital, Penarth offers a complete laparoscopic training provision from ST3 through to newly appointed consultants and those consultants who are new to laparoscopic procedure.

The information below outlines each stage of the training scheme. If you have any queries please do contact WIMAT directly.
