Why Train for Anaesthetics in Wales

There are some unique features to the Anaesthetics training programme in Wales and a huge variety of training opportunities available. This makes the answer as varied as the trainees and consultants in this specialty but we do find that most mention some of the points below

  • Wales has a diverse geography; the rolling countryside & costal areas of Wales offer a wealth of opportunities for sports enthusiasts or anyone that enjoys outdoor hobbies, whilst the cosmopolitan cities have all been recently re-developed and offer fabulous facilities for music, the arts, dining out, nightlife and of course, shopping.
  • Anyone who spends time with anaesthetists who work in Wales will appreciate that most enjoy a healthy work-life balance, which is encouraged from your training years.
  • Anaesthesia has always been considered a vanguard speciality in its approach to training.
  • The Welsh School of Anaesthesia is only School in the UK to offer a PMETB approved 1 year extension to all trainees appointed to a core training pilot programme in anaesthesia. During this 1 year extension, there will be an opportunity to spend a 6 month placement in a complementary speciality e.g. general medicine, paediatrics, emergency medicine or intensive care medicine, and consolidate your anaesthetic knowledge and skills before progression to StR training years.
  • Training in anaesthesia in Wales is highly structured and well-supported by Consultant trainers. During your core and specialist training years, you will be supported within your department by clinical supervisors, educational supervisors, college tutors and also representatives of the Welsh School of Anaesthesia and Deanery to ensure you receive the training and advice you require.
  • Although out-of-programme training opportunities either overseas or within the UK are encouraged within StR Years 5,6 or 7, there are a wide variety of advanced training options available within the School if you wish to specialise in a particular clinical or academic area;
    • Research fellowships, e.g. airway, paediatric, cardiovascular, immunology, obstetric, pre-hospital care, pre-operative assessment
    • Teaching posts, e.g. Clinical Lecturer at Cardiff or Swansea
    • Advanced training modules, e.g. obstetrics, pain management, cardiacothoracic
