Academic Careers in Wales

Academic Medicine and Dentistry offer a career encompassing clinical practice, research and teaching. This combines training within a clinical specialty and world class medical research and teaching within medical schools and beyond. Wales offers early training in Academic Medicine through the Academic Foundation Programme and subsequently through the competitive Wales Clinical Academic Training (WCAT) Fellowship Programme.

This offers clinical speciality training with academic research together with allocated time to the complete a PhD degree. Established links exist within Welsh Universities with strong track records in medical research, teaching and supervision. The programme is aimed to provide the senior clinical academics of tomorrow. Along with this Academic Fellowship posts and Clinical Lecturer posts exist within specialities.

Assessments for Academic trainees

If you are in an Academic Clinical Fellow post or a Clinical Lecturer post (NIHR and locally funded) then you will need to complete the following document (Annex A) and submit to your school support manager in advance of your assessment with all your other paperwork. You should have a meeting with your academic supervisor at least one month prior to your assessment in order to complete this. It is advisable to meet two months in advance to discuss the paperwork, and then one month in advance to sign in off for submission for your assessment.

ARCP/RITA Assessments

There is no specific information offered in the Orange Book for SpRs regarding Academic RITAs. However, academic representation will always be present on the panel.
