Feedback Mechanisms

Feedback Mechanisms

The Deanery's quality management system involves the triangulation of evidence from trainees, trainers and those responsible for the management of training. An essential component of our quality management framework is to ensure that there are adequate feedback mechanisms for the collection of information from those who have first hand experience of our training programmes. We obtain feedback from trainees and trainers, both on a national and local level through a variety of mechanisms which are listed below.

Routine National Feedback Opportunities

GMC National Trainee Survey

The GMC (formerly PMETB) undertakes an annual national survey of all trainee doctors in order to obtain a picture of trainees' perceptions of the quality of their training in relation to the GMC's standards for training as detailed in 'The Trainee Doctor'. The survey takes the format of an online questionnaire which asks questions on areas such as workload, the level and quality of supervision and the way in which training is delivered. Completion of the survey is mandatory for foundation and specialty trainees as per the Purple and Gold Guides respectively.

GMC National Trainer Survey

The GMC 2011 National Trainer Survey was launched on 2nd May 2011 and closed on 22nd July 2011. All Consultants who act as Clinical or Educational Supervisor as well as GP Trainers were invited to complete it. The aim of the survey was to gather feedback on areas such as:

  • Whether trainers received appropriate training to undertake their role.
  • Whether the workload was appropriate for training.
  • Whether trainers were supported in their role through the job planning and appraisal process.

Ad-Hoc Local Feedback Opportunities

ARCP Feedback Form

The ARCP (Annual Review of Competence Progression) feedback form is a quality control tool which enables ARCP panel members to flag up any potential difficulties within training programmes. Upon receipt of a form, the Quality Unit will work with the STC and Local Education Provider (LEP) to investigate the issue further either through the Commissioning Process or the Targeted Process depending upon which is considered to be the most appropriate course of action. Please click on the link below to obtain a copy of the ARCP Feedback Form.

Trainee Feedback Form

Both the GMC (formerly PMETB) National Trainee Survey and the End of Placement Evaluation survey provide an opportunity for trainees to feed back their views on the quality of their training on a routine basis. However, there may be instances where there is a particular area of concern which needs to be addressed quickly. Such issues can be raised through Postgraduate Organisers, Educational Supervisors and by completing the Trainee Feedback Form.

End of Placement Evaluation

We recognise the importance of harnessing up-to-date trainee feedback in relation to posts and have therefore developed a generic Deanery End of Placement Evaluation survey. This will be used by the Quality Unit as a reactive tool and will be made available, via an online questionnaire, to trainees based within specialties or locations for the following reasons:

  • Where we consider that there may be an issue with an element of the training programme
  • To enable us to monitor the extent to which improvements have been made

The feedback obtained from the survey is consolidated and reviewed by the Quality Unit and considered in conjunction with other quality control data in order to ensure that a balanced perspective is obtained.

End of Placement Evaluation Forms are also used on a routine basis by the Foundation and Specialty Training Schools which provide a valuable source of data.
