Previous Student Evaluation Outcomes

What, for you, are the key features/characteristics of this course?

  • To enable one to understand that:
    • Teaching does not need to be antiquated and old. It can be innovative (small group techniques, gaming etc.)
    • Enthusiasm in one’s subject can be infectious on the students.
    • The course approaches medical education in an interesting and thought provoking manner.
  • Meeting colleagues from other specialties and gaining from their different perspectives.
  • Learning the theory behind what will hopefully be an improvement in my teaching.
  • Much freedom. This has been a smashing course for me precisely because of the freedom from constraints. Still, the nature of us is to be competitive, and the absence of a map to navigate success is quite vexing. That said I have had the opportunity to deeply learn a remarkable set of educational philosophy, techniques and discourse about the value of assessment, how learning occurs, what is knowable and what is known about what should be taught – thanks.
  • “Self” led with good facilitations in most modules – good on “reflection” of teaching philosophies on education (not just medical education) which is very challenging.

How would you sum up the key messages from the course?

  • Learning outcomes should dictate the way courses are designed, delivered, assessed and finally evaluated. Planning, planning, planning is essential!
  • Don’t try to do it all yourself, make your learner work.
  • Qualitative research can be valuable and just as rich as “pure sciences”.
  • We need to do more sociology at med school!
  • I’ve an awful lot more to learn and want to continue doing so.
  • Planning, planning, planning before conducting your educational activities. Planning:
    • Planning the event (aims, objectives)
    • Planning instructional learners process
    • Planning assessment evaluation how to use it to improve.

What has been the influence/impact of the course on your professional and educational practice?

  • Positive impacts:
    • Changed my way of teaching and learning
    • Learned new ways of lessons’ design
    • Learned a lot about assessment and evaluation
    • Interaction with many other students and tutors enriched my views about many things in education.
  • Establishing learners outcomes and having lesson plans prior to any teaching I now do.
  • Incorporating a variety of techniques of teaching within same session to maintain student interest and attention.
  • Using more group work with problem based like approach of situated learning to:
    • Encourage students participation
    • Encourage clinical reasoning
    • Increase relevance of topic taught.
  • Reflection of one’s teachers and self-evaluation.
  • Immense: there have been some real challenges both with fitting in all the work and of a full time job but also learning that it can be done – even if I do have a lot more grey hair!! I have put what I have learnt directly into my practice and reaped the rewards. Wish I had more time to do the research element – I do feel very constrained by the time frame.
  • I’ll keep you informed.
  • Enhance job opportunities – more opportunities to teach, and be involved in teaching. Personal development.
  • More awareness of educational issues and challenges.
  • More embracing of modern education techniques to spread and teach others and to change “culture” with medical teaching.
