Short Courses

These courses are organised as and when there is a need and taught by members of the Academic Section of Medical and Dental Education.

Effective Teaching Skills

A two day course in teaching and planning healthcare education aimed at educational and clinical supervisors, lecturers, trainers, course organisers and other health professionals with an involvement in teaching. The course aims to refresh teachers' approaches to teaching and learning and include sessions on: how we learn, teaching practical and clinical skills, educational supervision and feedback, educational media, large and small group techniques. Places are limited to around 20.

Assessing Trainees in Clinical Settings

This is a one-day course that is offered to all those involved in assessing trainees in clinical settings.

The course aims to:

  • provide an overview of some methods of workplace-based assessment such as mini-CEX, DOPS and MSF
  • identify the skills involved in effective assessment
  • explain the principles of effective assessment, and the theoretical foundations underpinning the assessment of trainees in clinical settings
  • provide an opportunity to develop and practise assessment and feedback skills

Teaching Techniques

This is a one day course.  Sessions include:

  • teaching techniques for small and large groups
  • teaching practical skills

Contemporary Issues in Medical Education

4Experienced clinicians as well as relative newcomers to teaching such as Specialty Trainees and recently qualified nurses, pharmacists and dentists are attracted to our study days on a variety of contemporary issues, for example: Performance Issues in Doctors, Creating Educational Change, Educational Supervision, Personal Tutoring, Becoming an Effective Mentor/Mentee, Using Simulators for Training, Supporting Trainees with their Careers, Effective Leadership in Healthcare Education, Dealing with Supervision Dilemmas, Peer Review of Teaching, Writing for Publication in the Social Sciences, Achieving Inclusivity in Clinical Education, Spicing up your Lectures.
