Tools for Supporting Trainees

In this section you will find a range of resources to use during discussions with trainees which include or focus solely on career development.

Supporting Self Assessment

You can signpost trainees to the Self Assessment Tools section for resources, on the "What Do I Want?" page. Download our Career Self Assessment and Action Plan which contains a range of questionnaires on career values, interests and transferable skills which build into a personal action plan. You can use this as part of educational supervision.

A document with guidelines on accessing and using Sci59, an online tool to help with specialty choice, is in the Related Resources area on this page. The Open University site for Sci59 background information about the tool.

The Deanery Careers Team can offer psychometric profiling as part of individual careers support for doctors who are referred for specialist guidance, including the Myers Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI). These tools can be used to help clarify motivation and values, occupational interests and personal strengths and limitations. The NHS Medical Careers offers some helpful information on the use of MBTI in career support.

Supporting Career Reflection

Browse the following selection of downloadable documents which you can use to help trainees structure their career thinking and provide a starting point for reflection and discussion:

  • alt Recording My Career Insights [32.5 Kb]
Helps encourage reflection on experience after placements, rotations, tasters attachments etc. Ideal for early careers doctors who are working to pin down their long-term choices.
  • alt Constructing a Lifeline [133.5 Kb]
Supports reflection over a longer, more established career path. Helpful in supporting doctors though more complex decisions and transitions.
  • alt Push or Pull? [30.0 Kb]
Helps to identify balance or imbalance between factors “pushing” a career pathway (things that have to be done/achieved) and those “pulling” ((things that attract, inspire, motivate). Helpful in supporting doctors who have lost motivation or enjoyment by identifying how the balance can be redressed.
  • alt Career Kitbag [49.0 Kb]
Helps at times of transition or progression by assessing what career elements should be taken forward or left behind.
  • alt Career Anchors [37.0 Kb]
An approach to identifying core values and motivational drivers behind a career pathway. Based on theory by Edgar Schein.
  • alt Roads to Success Work Value Cards [42.5 Kb]
A card-sort which helps doctors identify key components and values in a medical career, the elements they need in order to feel motivated.
  • alt My Work Values [34.5 Kb]
A sheet to record the “Top 8” work values in the Very Important category, with reflection prompts.
  • alt Internet Links for Windmills Exercises [118.5 Kb]
Links to generic on-line self assessment activities to help doctors think through different aspects of their life-career-personal development.

The outputs from these activities can be used as evidence of reflective practice in portfolios. We will continue to add new resources.
