Respiratory (see also asthma)

The group has formed strong links between Respiratory Units in Hywel Dda (Llanelli) and ABM Health Boards and the School of Engineering (mechanical and fluid dynamics), Department of Printing (volatiles analysis) and Bioinformatics in the School of Medicine (ILS). Current projects extend from screening and physiology through biochemistry and subsequent clinical trials.


Ongoing Research includes:

Basic Sciences

  • Use of Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) on sputum in detecting lung cancer and COPD
  • Testing exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in lung cancer and COPD.
  • Analysis of sputum mechanical properties (rheology) in COPD.

Clinical Sciences

  • Investigating the pathogenesis of cough in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
  • Role of sleep disordered breathing in cardiovascular risk.
  • Smoking and smoking cessation in lung cancer patients.
  • Telemedicine and COPD.
  • Health informatics and epidemiology
