Betsi Cadwaladr HB Paeds

Paediatrics at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board

Betsi Cadwaladr Univeristy Health Board provides a full range of primary, community, mental health and acute hospital services for a population of approximately 676,000 across Anglesey, Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham.

Ysbyty Gwynedd (Bangor Hospital)

The acute paediatric unit consists of 11 cubicles, 1 oncology cubicle, 1 resuscitation room, 1 high dependency room, 1 ENT assessment room, 4x4-bedded bays, 1 adolescent 4-bedded bay and 1 4-bedded assessment unit. There is also a special care baby unit which can care for up to 12 babies.

Ysbty Glan Clwyd (Rhyl Hospital)

Ysbyty Glan Clwyd is a centrally-placed DGH in North Wales, with approval for training in both general paediatrics and neonates. There are 2 inpatient paediatric wards, a neonatal nursery with 3-4 intensive care cots and a designated children's outpatient department in a purpose-built block.

There is a comprehensive, structured in-house educational programme with 3 hours internal teaching per week, plus hospital grand rounds. Trainees are enrolled in the North Wales ST1-3 teaching programme which runs for one afternoon each month. There are also excellent opportunities to access outpatient clinics, including visiting specialty clinics. Feedback from the GMC trainee survey is very positive about the educational programme. There are opportunities within the department for structured and supervised involvement in research, audit and other clinical governance activity. There are close links to the Postgraduate Medical Education Centre and North Wales Clinical School, including access to their excellent facilities and the medical library.

Rhyl is a beautiful part of North Wales which encourages an outdoor lifestyle, yet is close to Manchester, Liverpool and Chester. There are excellent schools and housing available with superb recreational facilities and close proximity to Snowdonia National Park.
