Anuerin Bevan Health Board delivers health care services to a population of over 600,000 people in Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen. There are three major acute hospitals (of which two are used for paediatric training), and eighteen community hospitals.
Nevill Hall Hopsital is located in Abergavenny. The child health department consists of a 27 bedded ward and a neonatal unit providing level 2 care and there is full integration with community child health services. There are 5 ST4-8 posts and 2 ST1-3 posts. In addition there are 5 consultants (each with special interests), 1 clinical fellow and and 2 FP1s.
There are very good opportunities for further training and time to develop areas of individual interests. Research and audit are actively encouraged and there is an excellent newly built postgraduate centre.
Abergavenny is situated within the Brecon Beacons National Park which provides excellent opportunities for outdoor pursuits, and many places of historical interest. There are excellent road and rail links and it is only 45 minutes away from the cities of Cardiff and Bristol.
The Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport is an associated teaching hospital and busy district general hospital.
The paediatric department has 2 ST1-3 posts and 7 ST4-8 posts. There are three paediatric wards including an adolescent unit, a dedicated paediatric assessment unit (including a comprehensive outpatient department) and an observation area. There are regular general paediatric and sub-specialty clinics, including diabetes, endocrinology, gastroenterology, asthma/allergy, cystic fibrosis, epilepsy, neurodisability and feeding disorders.
The neonatal unit is a level 3 neonatal intensive care unit with 8 intensive care, 6 high dependency and 13 special care cots. It caters for 6,000 deliveries across Gwent and has over 1,500 intensive care days annually. Babies of all gestations are looked after here, apart from those requiring surgical or cardiac care, who are referred to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, with whom there are close links. Trainees are able to gain a wide range of experience in neonatal medicine and all aspects of neonatal intensive care. The neonatal unit offers a very active and exciting post-graduate teaching programme. Trainees are expected to participate in audits, reviews, journal club presentations, x-ray meetings and teaching. There is a progressive post-graduate department and an excellent library service within the hospital. There are 7 ST1-3 posts and 6 ST4-8 posts.
