Less Than Full Time (LTFT) Training

About Less Than Full Time (LTFT) Training

The Less Than Full Time (LTFT) training scheme is available to men and women, married or single, who have well-founded reasons which prevent them from working full-time such as:

  • being the parent of a young child\children
  • caring for an ill or disabled relative
  • having a disability
  • having a health problem.

Less Than Full Time Training is open to Foundation years one and two, Speciality Trainees, Specialist Registrars and GP Registrars.

Early application is advised as it can take several months to arrange a LTFT placement. If you would like to discuss the process please contact Lorraine Kemble, Executive Officer for LTFT by Email or Tel: 029 2068 7442.

Most Family-Friendly Deanery

The Wales Deanery has been recognised with a national award for its family friendly policies.

The Wales Deanery received the highest number of votes in a UK-wide survey for the most Family-Friendly Deanery led by the Medical Women's Federation. The survey explored areas including the organisation of rotas for junior doctors, cover for colleagues on maternity/sick leave, availability of advice and help with childcare and Less than full time training. This service is open to trainee Foundation years one and two, Speciality Trainees, Specialist Registrars and GP Registrars.

Requirements of the Scheme

image-115263-webThe purpose of the LTFT training scheme is to give training grade doctors and dentists the opportunity to continue their training on a less than full time basis when full-time work is impossible or unreasonable rather than having to give up work.  Therefore, other paid employment cannot be combined with Less Than Full-time Training.

LTFT Training provides the same range of experience and education as full-time posts, though it will obviously take longer to fulfill the educational requirements set by the Royal College or Faculty. The usual percentage of training undertaken by LTFT trainees is 50 percent however, trainees can also request to work at 60 percent.

Educational Monitoring

The Less Than Full Time Training Advisory Committee meets once a year to discuss flexible training policy.

LTFT Categories

Doctors and dentists unable to train full-time will be placed in the following categories:

Category 1

  • Disability or ill-health (this may include those on IVF programmes).
  • Carers' responsibility (men and women) for children.
  • Caring for an ill/disabled partner, relative, or other dependent.
  • These result in the individual doctor or dentist being professionally disadvantaged by circumstances, and less able to fulfil their potential on a full-time than on a LTFT basis.

Category 2

  • Unique opportunities for personal/professional development.
  • Service to the wider NHS.
  • Research.

Study Leave for LTFT Trainees

Study leave funding is on a pro rata basis for LTFT trainees, this means the same total funding over the duration of the training programme. LTFT trainees should apply for study leave in the usual way. This varies between employers and your local Postgraduate Officer and Postgraduate Centre Manager can advise you.

Period of Grace

LTFT Trainees are offered the opportunity to have a post CCT period of grace of 6 months, which is the same for trainees working full-time.

Acting Up in a Consultant Post

Before 'Acting-Up' trainees must obtain formal approval from the Postgraduate Dean or Deputy and the Training Programme Director. The 'Acting-Up' application form is available here on the Deanery website. docForm_AUC_application_Sept_09.doc
