GP Trainees

This area of the site contains information for GP Trainees in Wales. Here you will find all the information you require during your time as a GP Trainee.

Essential Information Summary

  • Registration with the RCGP and the e-portfolio
Prior to commencing your GP Training you must register with the Royal College of General Practioners (RCGP) as an Associate in Training (AiT). You will need a National Training Number (NTN) to enable you to register and gain access to the RCGP eportfolio which is a requirement of GP Specialty Training.
  • National Training Numbers (NTNs)
Information on how to obtain an NTN can be found here
  • Form R
As a requirement of the Gold Guide, all trainees in training must submit an annual registration Form R. Further information can be found here
  • GP Programme Directors
Each GP Training Scheme has two GP Programme Directors . They should be your first point of contact for any queries you have about your training.
  • Questionnaires
Throughout your training you will be expected to complete the GMC Trainee Survey which is issued in the Spring of each year. The surveys are a pivotal element of the Quality Framework which help those involved with training ensure it is delivered to the national standards required. Further information can be found here . Further information on the Wales Deanery Quality Assurance Unit can be found here
In addition to the GMC Survey you will also be asked to complete an online End of Placement Evaluation Form (EPEF) every 6 months. We recognise that the number of questionnaires you are asked to complete can be onerous. However, this EPEF should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete and the anonymised results are extremely valuable to the Deanery and the GP Programme Directors in highlighting issues and good practice on individual training schemes. We appreciate the time you take to complete these and would like to assure you that the information you give is highly important to us.
  • GP Specialty Training Representatives
The GP Training Section has an active group of GP Specialty Training Representatives. Further information can be found here
  • Less than Full Time Training
If you are considering training less than full time and would like to know more about the criteria and how to apply, further information can be found here
  • Study Leave
As a doctor in training you are entitled to study leave. Further information on this can be found here
  • Inter and Intra Deanery Transfers
If during your GP Training you have had a significant change of personal circumstances, you may be able to apply for an Inter Deanery (outside of Wales) or Intra Deanery (within Wales) transfer. Further information can be found here
  • Maternity and Paternity Leave
For information on maternity and paternity leave, please click here
  • Out of Programme Experience
After having completed 12 months of your GP training you may be eligible to apply for Out of Programme experience. Further information can be found here
      Educational Supervisors
During your GP training you will be assigned a GP Educational Supervisor who will provide guidance and feedback to you throughout your training. Further information can be found here
  • Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) Panels
As per the Gold Guide, every 12 months in training you are required to have an Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) Panel to assess your progress over the last 12 months. Further information can be found here
  • GP Trainee Annual Appraisal
As per the Gold Guide, you are required to have an annual appraisal with your GP Educational Supervisor. Your outcome from your ARCP Panel forms part of your GP trainee appraisal, as a result this will take place after the ARCP Panels. Further information can be found here
  • GP Specialty Academic Trainee (GPSAT) Posts
At the beginning of your ST1 year you will be invited to apply in open competition for a GP Specialty Academic Trainee post. Further information can be found here
  • Medical Performers List (MPL)
Towards the end of your ST1 year you will be required to apply to the Medical Performers List in Wales to enable you to work in a general practice post. Further information can be found here

ARCP Panels

Purpose

The old style paper-based RITA and VTR forms have now been replaced by an assessment process for specialty training which is based on the more explicit use of evidence to inform the annual assessment outcome of progress (Gold Guide). This is known as the Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP).

Annual Leave

Background

In December 2007 the BMA amended the BMA/COGPED model framework contract in respect of annual leave entitlements. The BMA advised that in line with the hospital terms and conditions of service, those GP specialty registrars on point three or above of the specialty registrar pay scale are those who are eligible for additional leave. All other GP specialty registrars should retain the existing entitlement of annual leave.

Deanery Transfers

There are two options currently available to GP Specialty Trainees who may for various reasons need to continue their training in another part of the country. This includes:

  • Intra-Deanery Transfers - for Trainees who meet the eligibility criteria to move from one scheme to another within Wales.
  • Inter-Deanery Transfers - for Trainees who meet the eligibility criteria to move from the Wales Deanery to another Deanery in the UK.

The following pages provide further information on each transfer process including eligibility criteria, deadline dates and links to the relevant application forms.

Inter-Deanery Transfers

An Inter-Deanery Transfer can be described as a movement of a Trainee from one Deanery to another within the UK, for example a transfer from the Wales to Northern Deanery. The arrangements for this apply to both full-time and part-time Trainees. Movement is at the discretion of the Postgraduate Dean/Director of Postgraduate General Practice Education and Trainees will be expected to show that they have well-founded reasons for moving.
