The Gwent and South Powys Scheme is one of the biggest, longest established and the most popular training schemes in Wales. We have more than 50 doctors in training on the scheme at a given time. Our training practices are available in a wide variety of locations from the beautiful Brecon Beacons to Newport, Wales's newest city offering an opportunity to experience general practice in urban, suburban and rural locations. We have an excellent group of trainers who are committed to helping you become an excellent and enthusiastic GP as well as pass of the MRCGP examination.
The final twelve month GP registrar placement is at the end of your training during the ST3 year. In your ST2 year you will spend six months in general practice. This gives you the opportunity to sample life as a GP in a variety of settings and broaden the experience. We do not allocate registrars to practices in the final year, giving you a choice as to where are you placed.
Many doctors wish to attend courses and gains skills in Child Health Surveillance and Minor Surgery during their training. These courses can expensive and difficult to access. As well as broadening your skills base they make you more marketable in the workplace once your training is completed.
The scheme organises these courses for you and will give you preferential booking. We encourage doctors to complete these courses during their general practice placements.
Whether you like the outdoor life and enjoyed walking in the Brecon Beacons, finding a good read in literary Hay on Wye or enjoy shopping in quirky boutiques in small market towns like Monmouth or Abergavenny or cities like Newport, we have lots to offer.
All hospital and practice posts are within easy commuting distance from Cardiff and the M4 corridor. There are excellent schools and leisure facilities available throughout Gwent and South Powys.
Have a look at scheme website for further details and he what we have to offer here. Informal enquiries are welcome. Please contact the scheme Programme Directors via the website.
