GP appraisal is centrally co-ordinated by the Wales Deanery Appraisal and CPD Unit, and is delivered by teams of trained, professional GP Educators who are employed as Appraisal Co-ordinators and Appraisers.
The Appraisal Co-ordinators each lead a team of Appraisers in a defined geographical area and co-ordinate all appraisal activity. They contribute to the recruitment, training and performance management of Appraisers and to issues relating to consistency of operation, Quality Assurance, development and implementation of process.
The Appraisers play a vital role in the implementation of GP Appraisal in Wales, undertaking the appraisal of GPs at local level. Appraisers are involved in:
• Undertaking approximately 30 GP appraisals per year
• Providing advice on appraisal to individual GPs, HBs and other stakeholders
• Liaising closely with the AC on issues relating to the Allocated Quarter and Communication Protocols
• Liaising closely with the CPD team to inform the delivery of educational programmes
• Participating in initial, ongoing and refresher training
• Attending national and regional Appraiser meetings
• Participating in and contributing to other aspects of the appraisal process including training others, informing online system developments, Quality Assurance and evaluation of the appraisal process
An Appraisal Board comprising the GP Director, Deputy Director, Appraisal Co-ordinators, and members of the Appraisal and CPD Unit, is responsible for developing, refining and monitoring appraisal activity.
