International Medical Graduates

International Medical Graduates

In the UK the term International Medical Graduates (IMGs) refers to overseas doctors and refugee doctors whose primary medical qualification is from a medical school outside the UK and EU. This term also includes UK citizens who have trained in medical schools outside the UK and EU, and overseas doctors who have trained in a UK medical school but do not have rights of residence.

Doctors who have trained in EU medical schools and have worked in the EU countries are considered separately in the UK as they have rights similar to UK trained doctors.

Wales Deanery has been approved by UKBA as a Tier 2 sponsor

Wales Deanery is now able to process Tier 2 sponsorship applications for doctors and dentists applying for training posts in Wales. This enables trainees to rotate within their specialty through Local Health Boards in Wales without having to apply for a new sponsorship each time they rotate. Resident labour market testing applies. Please click on

Career Information

The Wales Deanery is not able to offer any jobs. All appointments are made in open competition and jobs are advertised through periodicals e.g. BMJ Careers.

Clinical Attachments

Wales Deanery is unable to arrange a clinical attachment for you.

You may also wish to refer to the Clinical Attachment Guidelines on the British Medical Association (BMA) website.

EU Doctors

As UK is a part of the EU, medical graduates from EU member countries from EU countries have similar rights to UK Medical Graduates.

You may also wish to refer to the UK Border Agency webpages for European Economic Area and Swiss nationals.

Work Permit

Information regarding Work Permits can be found on the UK Border Agency website.

Immigration Guidelines

In April 2012 the UK Border Agency will close the Tier 1 (Post Study Work) immigration route. This route has previously been used by non-UK and non-EEA doctors who have graduated from a UK medical or dental school and have successfully completed their Foundation Programme.

The following advice on when to apply for specialty training will therefore apply for doctors applying for entry to programmes starting after 1 April 2012:
