The Cardiff Unit for Research and Evaluation in Medical and Dental Education (CUREMeDE)

The Cardiff Unit for Research and Evaluation in Medical and Dental Education (CUREMeDE) is a
collaborative development between the School of Social Sciences (SOCSI) and the School of
Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education.

The purpose of the unit is to conduct theoretically informed, methodologically robust
multidisciplinary research into the education and training of doctors, dentists and other health
professionals. The aim is to produce high quality outputs, publishable in international journals,
which contribute to enhancing the educational development of health professionals in Wales and
beyond. Research and evaluation interests include exploration of the educational impact of changes
such as:

  • Foundation training (Modernising Medical Careers)
  • Organisational restructuring
  • Competency and outcomes-based training
  • Workplace based learning
  • Assessment, revalidation and appraisal
  • Continuing professional development and lifelong learning
  • E-learning and developments in technology
  • Recruitment and selection
  • Role structures and extended duties

Current and recent projects include:

  • A Review of Dental Vocational Training (VT) by Assessment in England and Wales
  • An Exploration of Data on Recruitment to Specialty Training in Wales
  • An evaluation of e-learning CPD resources for staff and associate grade doctors in Wales
  • Dental VT Trainers Project: how prepared is the undergraduate?
  • Evaluation of the Certificate of Higher Education in Dental Nursing
  • Reorganisation of NHS Wales: Impact on Education & Training. 1: Pre-restructuring
  • Evaluation of rheumatology emodule for junior doctors in Wales (advisory role)
  • Competency-based training in intensive care in Europe – Innovation Transfer
  • Evaluation of the Vocational Training Scheme for Dental Therapists in NHS South Central

A key question in such work is to explore whether reform improves the performance of health
professionals and enhances the care provided to patients. The work of the unit offers scope to
compare the experience in Wales with other parts of the UK and overseas.
