Alternative Careers

If you are considering changing career pathway or even leaving medicine, it is advisable to seek expert careers support before you make any firm decisions.

To revisit a broad range of career opportunity with a medical degree, the Prospects website contains information on options, individual occupational profiles and an overview of relevant employment sectors such as Health and Voluntary.

  • NHS Medical Careers has information on a range alternatives to clinical or NHS practice in its “Career Options” section.
  • BMJ Careers also has articles on arrange of alternative careers and case studies in its careers advice section.
  • Medical Career Change is a directory of resources for doctors interested in investigating non-traditional (clinical or non clinical) career paths. The website also advertises jobs and links to other recruitment websites.
  • Doctors Career Choices advises doctors who wish to consider career options outside of mainstream clinical medicine. They also provide a recruitment service and have a list of job vacancies.
  • Medical Success has case studies and runs an annual conference for doctors seeking or pursuing careers outside medicine.
  • Kings College Medical School and South Thames Foundation School have also produced an excellent guide to alternative pathways for medical students which can be downloaded from this page
  • Beyond Clinical Practice is a London Deanery web resource for those considering alternative careers
