Resources for Career Helpers

Resources for Career Helpers

Career choice, development and management are pro-active lifelong processes which are to every stage of medical education, training and work. Career related activities should not be regarded as ‘added-on’ but fully integrated into the Foundation Programme and Specialty Training curricula. The Educational Supervisors input into training programmes should incorporate opportunities for reflection and discussion regarding each individual student’s or trainee doctor’s career choice and development. You are likely to be their first level of career support.

These web pages will help you to develop your role as a “career helper” and include:

  • Professional development resources
  • Tools and information which you can use in helping doctors to plan, explore and develop careers and career management skills
  • Generic materials and activities used during curriculum-based careers sessions in the Foundation Programme
  • Information about how the Deanery Careers Team can support you and provide expert support with complex career situations

You may in the first instance find it useful to familiarise yourself with the content of the Career Planning Resources section so that you can signpost doctors to this appropriately.

The UK Medical Careers Website also provides help and information for career helpers and you may wish to complement your journey through these pages by visiting this.

Developing Career Support Skills; Development options

GMC standards, from 2011, require all Educational Supervisors to demonstrate the skills required to provide career support and manage discussions with trainees.

The Deanery can run two-hour workshop entitled “Supporting Doctors with their Careers” which can be a standalone event or part of a broader Educational Supervisors Induction/development programme. It carries 2 CPD points from the RCP. Download the document below to view the session outline and contact PG Medical Careers for further information on how to organise a session:
