For Trainers and Supervisors in Wales

Supervising the Route to Excellence

In addition to monitoring and maintaining standards, the Quality Unit is also responsible for supporting and co-ordinating quality enhancement activities. A long term change programme entitled 'Supervising the Route to Execllence' has been launched and is designed to ensure that in the future, the Educational Supervisor and Clinical Supervisor roles are more appropriately recognised and supported by NHS Wales.

The programme is comprised of five project strands as outlined below:

1. Educational Supervisor Training Project

Project Sponsor - Professor Peter Donnelly

Project Managers - Mrs Mandy Martin

  • To define a minimum standard for training for Educational and Clinical Supervisors;
  • To develop and deliver Wales wide Educational Supervisor inductions;
  • To establish a portfolio of training;
  • In accreditation of external training, to implement the recommendations for ongoing training needs analyses.

 

2. Educational Supervisor Database

Project Sponsor - Dr Aidan Byrne

Project Manager - Mr Ian Thorburn

  • To ensure the information contained within the Deanery's minimum dataset for Educational Supervisors is input and maintained within a suitable database;
  • To carry out bi-annual validations of data.

 

3. Educational Supervision Tripartite Agreement

Project Sponsor - Dr Sian Lewis

Project Manager - Mrs Caroline Groves

  • To carry out a baseline evaluation of the current status of training, support and recognition of Educational Supervisors in Health Boards;
  • To draft a tripartite agreement and engage with stakeholders;
  • To undertake piloting, implementation and evaluation of the agreement.

4. Quality Management of Educational Supervision

Project Manager - Mrs Mandy Martin

  • To establish direct feedback systems between Educational Supervisors and the Deanery, establish systems to monitor time and support available to Educational Supervisors within Health Boards;
  • To monitor and analyse training needs, facilitate the GMC Trainer Survey; run annual Educational Supervisor forums across Wales.

 

5. Postgraduate Organiser Role

Project Sponsor - Dr Sian Lewis

Project Manager - Miss Rachel Mort

  • To undertake a root and branch review of the current role of PGOs;
  • To define the future role of PGOs taking into account Health Board reconfiguration;
  • To professionalise the role of PGOs in terms of contractual relationship to the Deanery;
  • To identify training needs in accordance with the outcomes of the review and the needs of the Programme.

GMC 2011 National Trainer Survey

The GMC 2011 National Trainer Survey was launched on 2nd May 2011 and is open until 22nd July 2011. It takes the format of an online questionnaire and is open to all Consultants who act as Clinical or Educational Supervisor as well as GP Trainers.

The Wales Deanery has annouced the winners and finalists of the Wales Denaery BEST Awards 2011. In its third year, the initiative to honour Wales’ best medical supervisor or trainer. The Awards pay tribute to GPs, Consultants and Dentists who have demonstrated excellence in the role of Educational Supervisor or Trainer of Postgraduate Medicine in Wales.
